Death can be difficult to process, especially for those having to deal with a lot of other things in their daily lives. Whether it’s a family member, a friend, or a public figure, we all grieve those we care about. It was tough to say goodbye in 2022, especially regarding these five notable deaths.

Pope Benedict XVI, 95

One of the patriarchs of the Christian religion, Pope Benedict XVI left this world after falling ill at the age of 95. Benedict XVI was the head of the Roman Catholic Church from April 2005 to February 2013, when he became the first pope since 1415 to resign from the position.

Barbara Walters, 93

As a radio and television icon, Barbara Walters was one of the last century’s greatest American newscasters. She died last year at the age of 93 and will be missed by many. If you ever turned on the news for anything major, you likely saw Barbara in action giving you the latest news from around the world.

Gallagher, 76

In the 1960s, this comedian was not only in his prime but world-renowned as being the “wizard of weird.” He would follow his comedy act by smashing watermelons with a sledgehammer, dousing the audience in watermelon debris as a grand finale. His comedy was dry, witty, and unapologetic; he was truly an innovator of his craft and will be missed by many.

Jerry Lee Lewis, 87

One of the founders of the rock and roll scene and cousin to Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis was a musician and star in his own right as a pianist and vocalist. He was known for stirring up a crowd and making a scene in his heyday. Known for hits such as “Great Balls of Fire” and “A Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On,” Lewis was an entertainer the world will miss forever.

Queen Elizabeth II, 96

Queen Elizabeth II served Great Britain for over 70 years and was the longest-living heir to the throne. She was adored by many all over the world and loved as fiercely as she ruled gracefully. The Queen was also a mother, grandmother, aunt, and mentor to many. As someone of her status, it’s easy to understand why so many would want to acquire memorial products, such as pictures and pamphlets, to honor her passing.

The year 2022 was difficult for saying goodbye, and these five notable deaths—among many others—made it a year to remember. It’s never easy to let go of those you love; these figures are especially indicative of that truth.
